Announces Fragrance Synthesis Over the Internet
Thu Dec 21 23:15:00 2000 GMT
PLANO, Texas, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- AromaJet.com announced
today
that it has demonstrated interactive transmission of Synthesized
Smell over IP
(IPsmell(TM)). Using an interactive program that allows for the
creation of
aromas by mixing sixteen separate ingredients in 1% increments,
Dr. David B.
Wallace, AromaJet's Chief Technical Officer, transmitted a number
of distinct
fragrances from Sidney, Australia to an AromaJet Kiosk at AromaJet's
offices
in Plano, TX. Both Dr. Wallace's portable computer and the AromaJet
kiosk
were connected to the Internet and communicated with each other
through
AromaJet's SmellServer(TM).
Within seconds of sending a fragrance from Dr. Wallace's computer,
the
AromaJet Kiosk received the data required for it to create the
aroma. A
description of the fragrance was sent and displayed to AromaJet
engineers in
Plano asking if they wanted to accept it. After accepting the
fragrance, the
kiosk immediately generated the scent from a given set of ingredients,
using
AromaJet's patented aroma generation hardware & software.
AromaJet is currently developing products that use 16 ingredients
to generate
aromas. Systems with 32 components and beyond are planned for
the near
future. All of AromaJet's systems will be designed to operate
interactively
over the Internet using IPsmell(TM) technology.
In the past, custom perfumes were only possible for the "rich
and famous".
Fragrance design was limited to experienced perfumers with access
to
ingredients, know-how, and a laboratory. AromaJet technology
will change all
this.
In the future, a fragrance synthesizing system, such as the
one used in this
demonstration, will allow a renowned perfumer in Paris, France
to work
directly with a customer in Santa Fe, New Mexico to develop a
fragrance
tailored to her desires. Once the formula is identified, the
custom perfume can
be mixed, bottled, and shipped directly to the customer in Santa
Fe the next
day.
AromaJet's fragrance synthesizing ability and internet compatible
system will
also enable fragrance companies, perfume companies and consumer
product
companies to interact easily with one another and with their
customers.
Getting closer to the customer using digital aroma generation
technology will
alter the dynamics of the marketplace.

DEMONSTRATES PROOF-OF-CONCEPT
AROMA GENERATION SYSTEM FOR GAME ENVIRONMENTS
Prototype
shown at Game Developers Conference promises delivery of aromas
via Internet through digital control of local scent generation
SAN
JOSE, CA
(March 10, 2000) AromaJet.com today announced the
first public demonstration of its AromaJet technology,
which promises to radically change the video game playing experience.
The company demonstrated the technology at the Game Developers
Conference in San Jose, California, using a prototype aroma generation
device code-named "Pinoke." The proof-of-concept demonstration
showcased proprietary micro-jetting technology that enables software
code to control the selection and mixture of fragrances for release
at precisely the right time coinciding with on-screen events.
The company has several patents on the technology.
"AromaJet technology offers the first reliable, affordable
system for digital control of aroma generation," said Donald
J. Hayes, president and CEO of AromaJet.com (www.aromajet.com).
"We chose to debut the prototype at the Game Developers
Conference because we think one of the most exciting applications
for AromaJet technology will be in the gaming environment. Video
gamers have always been on the cutting edge of technology
faster processors, CD ROM, digital sound -- they're the early
adopters. The next step to enhancing virtual reality is the addition
of smell.
"We gave our prototype a personality and the code-name Pinoke,"
Hayes added. "Whatever devices come to market might or might
not resemble Pinoke. The aroma generating device could be incorporated
into hardware any number of ways. It could be embedded in a hand-held
controller, or it could even be worn around your neck or built
into a virtual-reality helmet."
AromaJet.com, The Technology
The technology demonstrated in Pinoke, the prototype aroma
generation system, uses safe, tested fragrances commonly found
in cosmetics, perfumes and foods. It offers what is believed
to be the first reliable technology that could be incorporated
into game environments at an affordable price.
"We expect that a device like our Pinoke prototype could
be brought to market for somewhere between $40 and $80, depending
on how it's implemented," said Hayes. "We're discussing
the possibilities with potential partners, and we expect the
hardware and software developers will come up with ideas that
might never occur to us."
AromaJet technology uses digital signals written into software
code that controls the aroma generator to emit precise amounts
and mixtures of vaporized scent chemicals.
The scent chemicals are supplied in a user-replaceable cartridge
that could be designed to contain the number and combination
of chemicals to fit a particular application. "The consumable
scent cartridge offers both hardware and software companies potential
recurring revenue," said Hayes. "That's part of what
makes this technology so attractive from a business perspective."
AromaJet.com plans to license the technology to software developers
and hardware vendors, or the company might provide the complete
system. "We're not locked into a particular business model,"
Hayes explained. "We'll work with interested parties in
a variety of ways to bring AromaJet technology to market."
AromaJet.com, The Company
AromaJet.com is a start-up company spun off from MicroFab
Technologies, Inc. (www.microfab.com), a privately held research
and development company based in Plano, TX. Scientists at MicroFab
Technologies developed the AromaJet technology as part of their
ongoing research into micro-jetting for applications in advanced
photonics and biomedical diagnostics. MicroFab Technologies works
with numerous Fortune 500 companies as essentially an outsourced
R&D group.
"Large companies look to MicroFab for research and development
related to our core expertise because we have a reputation for
being very innovative, and we can move very quickly through R&D
to product development," said Hayes, who is also the founder
of MicroFab Technologies. "We're experts in materials and
micro-jetting. That's the genesis of AromaJet technology. We've
come to the Game Developers Conference to meet potential partners
who are experts in game software and hardware development. Together
we'll revolutionize the gaming and entertainment environments."
